Hemodialysis

Specialized dialysis care focused on supporting kidney function, managing treatment needs, and providing patients with attentive and compassionate care throughout every session.

ABOUT THE HEMODIALYSIS UNIT

Dependable Care Throughout Your Dialysis Journey

The Hemodialysis Unit at Nazarenus Hospital provides treatment and supportive care for patients whose kidneys are no longer able to adequately remove waste and excess fluid from the blood.

Hemodialysis is an ongoing treatment that requires careful monitoring, consistent scheduling, and close coordination between the patient and healthcare team. Our goal is to provide each patient with a safe, comfortable, and respectful treatment experience while supporting the care plan established by their attending physician.

Throughout each dialysis session, the healthcare team monitors the patient’s condition, treatment response, and individual needs, helping provide continuity of care for patients who depend on regular hemodialysis treatment.

UNDERSTANDING HEMODIALYSIS

Helping Perform an Important Function of the Kidneys

Healthy kidneys continuously filter the blood, removing waste products and excess water while helping maintain the body’s fluid and mineral balance.

When the kidneys can no longer perform enough of this work, hemodialysis may be used as a kidney-replacement treatment. During hemodialysis, blood travels from the body through a dialysis machine and a special filter called a dialyzer. The filtered blood is then returned to the body.

Hemodialysis replaces only part of the work normally performed by healthy kidneys. Patients may still require medications, dietary and fluid management, regular medical monitoring, and continuing care from their healthcare team.

Blood Filtration

The dialysis system helps remove waste products and excess fluid that can accumulate when kidney function becomes severely reduced.

Fluid & Mineral Management

Treatment helps manage the buildup of excess water and certain minerals in the blood as part of the patient's prescribed dialysis care.

Continuing Kidney Care

Hemodialysis is usually part of a broader treatment plan that may also involve medications, nutrition guidance, laboratory monitoring, and regular medical evaluation.

OUR SERVICES

Comprehensive Support During Dialysis Treatment

Our Hemodialysis Unit is designed to support patients throughout their prescribed treatment through careful preparation, monitoring, dialysis care, and coordination with their healthcare team.

In-Center Hemodialysis Treatment

Scheduled hemodialysis sessions performed using dialysis equipment to filter the patient's blood according to the treatment plan prescribed by the attending physician.

Pre-Dialysis Assessment

Evaluation before treatment, which may include checking the patient's current condition, vital signs, weight, and other information relevant to the scheduled dialysis session.

Treatment Monitoring

Close observation throughout the dialysis session to monitor the patient's condition and response to treatment.

Vascular Access Monitoring

Attention to the patient's dialysis access before and during treatment to help support safe and effective blood flow through the dialysis system.

Fluid Management Support

Monitoring related to fluid removal based on the patient's prescribed treatment goals and clinical assessment.

Continuing Care Coordination

Communication and coordination with physicians, nurses, laboratory services, and other healthcare professionals involved in the patient's ongoing kidney care.

PATIENT CARE & SUPPORT

Care Focused on Consistency, Comfort, and Continuity

Hemodialysis is not simply a single procedure. For many patients, it becomes an important part of their ongoing healthcare routine. Our approach focuses on supporting patients throughout that continuing journey.

Attentive Treatment Monitoring

Patients are monitored throughout their dialysis session so the healthcare team can observe their condition and respond appropriately to treatment needs.

Individualized Dialysis Care

Dialysis treatment is provided according to the patient's prescribed treatment plan, medical condition, and individual healthcare needs.

Coordinated Medical Support

Dialysis care may involve collaboration with physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals involved in kidney care.

Continuity of Care

Regular treatment, monitoring, and communication help support patients who require continuing dialysis as part of their long-term medical management.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hemodialysis FAQs

What is hemodialysis?

Hemodialysis is a treatment used when the kidneys are no longer able to adequately filter the blood. During treatment, blood passes through a dialysis machine and dialyzer that help remove waste products and excess fluid before the blood is returned to the body.

No. Hemodialysis replaces only part of the work normally performed by healthy kidneys. Patients generally continue to require regular medical care and may also need medications, dietary guidance, fluid management, and other treatment.

The appropriate dialysis schedule depends on the patient’s individual condition and treatment prescription. Your nephrologist or attending healthcare team will determine how often and how long treatment should be performed.

Patients should bring any documents, medications, treatment information, or other items requested by the Hemodialysis Unit. Please contact the hospital before your first visit to confirm current requirements.

What is vascular access?

Vascular access provides a way for blood to leave the body, travel through the dialysis system for filtration, and return to the body. Types of access can include an arteriovenous fistula, graft, or dialysis catheter depending on the patient’s medical situation.

The healthcare team may assess your current condition, weight, blood pressure, vascular access, and other relevant information before beginning treatment.

Patients receiving hemodialysis may need individualized recommendations regarding fluids, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, and other aspects of nutrition. Follow the dietary and fluid instructions provided by your physician or renal care team.

Contact your dialysis or healthcare team for guidance. Patients experiencing severe or potentially life-threatening symptoms should seek immediate medical attention through the Emergency Department.
